Ureteropelvic Junction Obstructions
It is the name given to the stenosis of the urinary tract in the renal outlet. It is monitored in every 1500 births. Expansion of the canal that remains above the stenosis may cause renal function loss, stone formation and urinary tract infections in advanced cases. Usually during pregnancy, it can be detected by ultrasonography. And also in elder ages it can be diagnosed by pain or urinary tract infection. Diagnosis is made by serial ultrasound, scintigraphic tests (DTPA / MAG 3) showing the function and excretion of the kidney. Generally, only follow-up may be sufficient, but in cases of severe swelling or clinical problems (loss of function in the affected kidney, pain, urinary tract infection, stone formation), surgical intervention may be necessary. The aim of surgery is to remove the stenosis of the renal outlet and to reconstruct the urinary tract with sufficient width. Open surgery can be performed as well as laparoscopic (closed surgery) operations.
